Conifers (Pinopsida) are one of the developmental groups of gymnosperms. they are also called conifers (i.e. literally translated "cones" - conus = cone).
The oldest stratigraphic findings show us that the most original conifers appear already at the end of the geological period of the Carboniferous in the First Mountains. Their shape and species diversity is more pronounced in the Mesozoic in the Jurassic and reaches its peak in the Cretaceous. The evolution of conifer evolution can be traced by comparing the oldest primitive plants of the orders Cycadaceae and Jicaceae with the younger Pineaceae or Lianaceae, which are already approaching the Cryseed plants in several characters.
Conifers are developmentally much older than deciduous trees and were the dominant plants in prehistory. At present, pine trees are dominant in temperate climates and mountainous regions, and liana trees are found in tropical regions of the Old and New World.
