A black mineral that is rarely found in nature (its localities include India and Brazil). Onyx as such has a long history, however, and was very popular in ancient times. It was used to make gems (small engravings or sculptures in hard material) and intaglios (gems with a motif carved in depth), while rings and amulets made of onyx were used as seals.
In terms of chemical composition, onyx is a variety of chalcedony, the general name for fibrous cryptocrystalline quartz.
