Pink agates have an opaque milky appearance with a characteristic pink colour. They are sourced from an area in eastern Botswana covering approximately 300 km2. They are not mined but only collected freely on the surface.

In terms of chemical composition, agate is a variety of chalcedony, which is the general name for fibrous cryptocrystalline quartz.
