TheOrchidaceae, or Orchidaceae, is a family of monocotyledonous plants in the order Asparagales. Some older taxonomic systems place it in a separate order Orchidales. Their name comes from the Greek word orchis, which translates to testicle, after the shape of the underground tubers of the genus Orchis.
These plants are particularly valued for their beautiful flowers of all shades and colours. However, among tropical crops, they also include the economically important vanilla obtained from the fruit of the vanilla tree.
An important orchid collector of his time was the Czech traveller, gardener and botanist Benedikt Roezl. The entire genus Roezliella and many species also bear his name.
