Finishing the casing. The Water-washed casings are washed free of the last protein residues and the casing wall is strengthened by washing in a bath prepared from approx. 100 g of alum-Potassium alum dissolved in approx. 10 litres of Water. The treated casings are washed repeatedly in lukewarm Water and used for butchery purposes.
When tanning the hides, the surface of the tanned hide is repeatedly wiped with a lukewarm solution of approximately 250 g of alum-Potassium alum dissolved in about 10 litres of lukewarm Water to remove any residual protein. The treated skin is left to dry and treated in the usual way.
Potassium aluminium sulphate has astringent and antiseptic effects. Therefore, it can be used as a natural deodorant that inhibits the growth of bacteria responsible for body odour. Such use does not prevent sweating. Astringent properties are often used after shaving and against bleeding from small wounds and abrasions, nosebleeds and haemorrhoids. It is often used externally and internally in traditional medicine, for example in Ayurvedic medicine, where it is called phitkarí or saurashtri, and in Chinese medicine, where it is called 明礬 míngfán. it is also used for curing photographic emulsions (on film and paper), usually as part of a fixer; however, modern materials are already sufficiently cured from the factory and therefore this procedure is no longer common.
First aid: in case of breathing, transport the victim to fresh air. In case of breathing difficulties, arrange medical treatment. When in contact with skin, wash the affected area with min. 15 minutes with sufficient lukewarm drinking Water. Always clean contaminated clothing thoroughly before reuse. In case of eye contact, immediately flush eyes with running drinking Water for min. 15 minutes and seek medical attention. If swallowed, wash out the mouth with plenty of drinking Water, drink about 0.2 litres of Water or milk and seek medical attention.
