Carnelians are generally characterised by yellowish, reddish or reddish-brown hues due to the presence of hematite. Botswana carnelian, however, has a distinctive reddish-orange colour and is in real demand in the world. It is found, along with agates, in the semi-deserts of eastern Botswana, but it has long been forbidden to export unworked minerals from there. Moreover, due to the country's low technological sophistication, Botswana carnelians are a real rarity on the market.

In terms of composition, it is a variety of chalcedony, which is the general name for fibrous cryptocrystalline quartz.
