Lapis is distinguished by its distinctive blue colour, which is due to the mineral lazurite, which gives it its name, as the term lapis lazuli in Arabic reflects the blue colour. It has been mined in classical deposits (e.g. Badakhshan in Afghanistan) since ancient times. In the past, it was often used to produce the blue dye ultramarine.

Compositionally, it is a rock whose main component is the mineral lazurite, followed by grains of pyrite, calcite and mica.
