Lapis is distinguished by its distinctive blue colour, which is due to the mineral Lazurite. Thanks to it, it got its name, because the term LAPIS LAZULI in Arabic reflects the blue colour. It has been mined in classical deposits (for example Badakhshan in Afghanistan) since ancient times. In the past it was often used to produce the blue dye ultramarine.
In terms of composition, it is a rock whose main component is the mineral Lazurite, followed by grains of pyrite, CALCITE and Mica.
