Nicknamed the "angel stone", seraphinite has a deep grey-green to green-black colour, enhanced by a velvety lustre and sometimes unique patterns evoking bird feathers. It is also special in that it is found in only one locality in the Lake Baikal region of eastern Russia.

In terms of composition, it is a gem variety of the mineral clinochlore, which is classified as a chlorite, a group of hydrophilosilicates resembling micas.
