Sodium tetraborate is a preservative offering the same uses as boric acid (E284). In many countries its use is restricted to caviar (e.g. also in the Czech Republic) and some seafood, but in the past it was a traditional substance providing a protective waxy film on stored meat products, such as hams, which were thus protected from insects. Borax can also be found in some commercial vitamin supplements.

Tetraboritan sodný Na2B4O7 je anorganická sloučenina. Dekahydrát (triviálně borax) Na2B4O7 ·10 H2O, přesněji Na2[B4O5(OH)4]·8H2O se používá ve sklářském průmyslu. V přírodě se vyskytuje jako minerál borax. Bezvodý tetraboritan sodný se velmi často uplatňuje v metalurgii, kde tavenina tetraboritanu sodného překrývá roztavený kov a funguje jako ochranný prvek proti oxidaci zpracovávané slitiny. V analytické chemii je směs tetraboritanu sodného s uhličitanem sodným univerzálním tavidlem, používaným pro rozklady geologických a dalších obtížně rozpustných vzorků. Ve fotografické chemii se používá jako slabá zásada do jemnozrnných vývojek a speciálních přerušovacích lázní. V potravinářství se používá jako konzervant pod označením E 285.

Production: found naturally in areas where lakes dry up seasonally. Synthetically prepared from other borate salts.

Side effects
In terms of toxicity, sodium tetraborate has the same characteristics as boric acid (E285) and can have toxic effects both when ingested and in contact with the skin. Preparations containing E285 or E286 should not be used by children, who may be particularly sensitive to them. Frequent administration of higher amounts causes vomiting, diarrhoea, bleeding, anaemia and skin problems. According to the latest research, borax should be labelled as a reproductive hazard and a danger to pregnant women within the European Union.
Additional information: Acts as an antifungal agent and repellent. In the Czech Republic, use is restricted to caviar only. Not permitted as a food additive in the USA.
