Selenite is a fibrous and translucent form of gypsum. It is a relatively common mineral, formed when seawater dries in shallow bays and lagoons. The most famous selenite deposit is in Morocco, in the Mibladen region. Selenite is semi-translucent to milky white and is remarkable for its silky lustre. Because of its ease of working, it is widely used to make a variety of decorative objects and jewellery.
Limitations: It is a mineral of the sulphite group, soluble in acids and salt solutions.
