Sodium tetraborate is a preservative offering the same uses as Boric acid (E284). In many countries, its use is restricted exclusively to caviar (e.g. in the Czech Republic) and some marine animals, but in the past it was a traditional Substance Providing a protective wax film on stored meat products, such as hams, which were thus protected from insects. Borax can also be found in some commercial vitamin supplements.
Sodium tetraborate Na2B4O7 is an inorganic compound. Decahydrate (trivially borax) Na2B4O7 -10 H2O, more precisely Na2[B4O5(OH)4]-8H2O is used in the glass industry. It occurs naturally as the mineral borax. Anhydrous Sodium tetraborate is very often used in metallurgy, where the Sodium tetraborate melt covers the molten metal and acts as a protective element against oxidation of the processed alloy. In analytical chemistry, a mixture of Sodium tetraborate with Sodium carbonate is a universal flux used for the decomposition of geological and other difficult-to-dissolve samples. In photographic chemistry it is used as a weak base in fine-grained developers and special breaking baths. In the food industry it is used as a preservative under the designation E 285.
Characteristics: most commonly found in the form of a fine white crystalline powder easily soluble in Water.
Production: located in the countryside in areas where lakes dry up seasonally. It is prepared synthetically from other borate salts.
Adverse effects
In terms of toxicity, Sodium tetraborate has the same characteristics as Boric acid (E285) and may exhibit toxic effects both when ingested and in contact with the skin. Preparations containing E285, resp. E286 should not be used by children who may be particularly sensitive to it. Frequent administration of higher amounts causes vomiting, diarrhoea, bleeding, anaemia and skin problems. According to the latest research, borax must be labelled as a reproductive hazard and a danger to pregnant women within the European Union.
Additional information: acts as an anti-mould and repellent. In the Czech Republic, the use is limited to caviar only. Not permitted as a food additive in the USA.

Zamezte vdechování prachu/dýmu/plynu/mlhy/par/aerosolů. Používejte pouze venku nebo v dobře větraných prostorách. Při vdechnutí: přeneste postiženého na čerstvý vzduch a ponechte jej v klidu v poloze usnadňující dýchání. Při požití: necítíte-li se dobře, volejte TOXIKOLOGICKÉ INFORMAČNÍ STŘEDISKO nebo lékaře. Používejte ochranné rukavice / ochranný oděv / ochranné brýle / obličejový štít. Při styku s kůží: omyjte velkým množstvím vody a mýdla. Při zasažení očí: několik minut opatrně vyplachujte vodou. Vyjměte kontaktní čočky, jsou-li nasazeny, a pokud je lze vyjmout snadno. Pokračujte ve vyplachování. Při používání tohoto výrobku nejezte, nepijte ani nekuřte. Uchovávejte mimo dosah dětí.
