Eco-friendly washing or how to make soap slime

I'm sure many of you remember how our grandparents, and often our parents, used to use castile soap for washing. In the time of our grandmothers there was a famous cube soap with deer and later soap was sold in the form of soap flakes. It will come as no surprise to you that core soap is experiencing a renaissance again, especially thanks to young moms trying to protect their young children from the aggressiveness of today's laundry detergents.
Allergies and rashes are a common problem in children, so moms are increasingly returning to washing in core soap. But often they don't know how to do it, or they have doubts about whEther such washing will ruin an automatic washing machine with lots of electronics and smart functions. So, in this article you will learn all about washing in core soap and I warn you that you will not ruin your washing machine in any way.
So what do we need?
  • 1 cube of castile soap
  • Crystalline Soda - Do not use Baking soda as it causes greying of the laundry.
  • a
  • 10 litre bucket (with a lid so that the washing emulsion does not dry out over time)
  • Water
Workflow for making soap slime
Grate the soap cube on a coarse grater into the bucket. The grammage of the soap is indifferent at this point because we will work proportionally.
Pour the grated soap with warm Water (I pour 2 kettles of 1.7 litres one after the other) and stir thoroughly with a spoon. Let the soap melt, stirring occasionally. Each soap has a different dissolving time, but half an hour is usually enough.
At the time of dissolving, prepare the soda. We look at the weight of the soap and weigh out half the amount of soda. Example - if the soap is 180 g, we weigh 90 g of soda. Put it in a smaller pot or other container. Once the soap has dissolved, pour hot Water over the Baking soda, stir until it is dissolved, and then pour it into the bucket with the soap. Stir and observe that the mass thickens. Stirring constantly, then add more Water. This time the temperature doesn't matter, I use rather cold so that the bucket doesn't boil. Gradually top up the bucket to the required quantity.
What is the required quantity? Each soap has a completely different weight. So if we have a small soap, we can add less Water, if we have a large soap, we add up to 10 litres. But it is better to add more Water (I recommend to always add at least 8 liters, because the soap thickens gradually, it becomes salty only on the second day and when there is not enough Water, the washing emulsion is much harder). If the soap happens to be too stiff, we can use a spoon to "scrape" it a bit before washing so that it dissolves better during washing. If the soap is runny, it doesn't matter, it's a liquid washing gel, but put a little more in the wash.
How to wash in soap?
Dispense soap directly into the drum. Use 2 dcl of soap emulsion per 5 kg of laundry. It's better to put the soap in an empty drum and load the laundry afterwards, as it's harder to dispense into a full drum.
Close the washing machine door, put plain vinegar (1 dcl) into the container where the fabric softener is poured and switch on the programme. Vinegar acts as a fabric softener. Soap is highly alkaline, and if we hadn't added a low-pH substance, the laundry would have been too hard after drying. Vinegar softens the clothes wonderfully - and don't worry, the clothes don't smell of vinegar, vinegar doesn't cause any stains, on the contrary, the colours are fixed by vinegar (those who have ever dyed or batiked textiles know). After washing, the laundry smells like soap. In the case of all-natural soaps without perfumes, the scent is neutral, you can smell practically nothing.
Washing efficiency
Washing in soap is excellent in this regard. It really washes everything, the colours are still nice thanks to the vinegar, white is white. I wash all my jeans in soap, except I always turn them inside out. The vinegar fixes the colours nicely, so the black shirts are black and not washed out even after frequent washing.
How to spot
We have all boys in our family, so spots are a daily occurrence - from grass, dirt, ketchup, fruit, etc. For spots, there is bile soap, which can be bought for a few crowns in DM drugstores. However, I don't make any emulsion from this soap, but apply it directly on the spot. I put the piece of laundry with the stain in the tub, shower it to soak it. I take the bile soap in my hand and rub the whole spot thoroughly until I see a thin layer of soap forming. Then I wrap the piece with the stain inside and let the soap work for a longer time, or I take the laundry and throw it straight into the washing machine (depending on the intensity of the stain).
Bile soap is never washed out before washing, the treated piece is washed with the rest of the laundry in the soap emulsion as described above. Bile soap will remove the stain during washing. It works flawlessly, the colors don't get ruined in any way, no worn spots or anything like that. After washing, nothing is visible at all, as my light blue jeans, accidentally dripping with blood, can testify.
Bleaching
If you need to bleach some laundry, I recommend adding regular baking powder to your soap before washing. The loosening powder contains phosphates (phosphates), so it really whitens the laundry. You can pour 1-2 sachets of soap loosening powder directly into the drum. At laundry time, you can then think about whEther the loosening powder is also suitable for you to eat. I figured not for us. As a substitute, I use cream of tartar (available at health food stores) or plain Baking soda (available everywhere).
Doesn't the washing machine get ruined?
No way. I have been washing in soap for over a year, both at home and at the cottage, and in that time there has been no problem. My friend has been washing in soap much longer than I have and she is also very happy. I should point out that we both use those very smart machines that weigh the laundry themselves, determine the washing time, have all sorts of functions, in short are all digital and not exactly cheap. Vinegar and soap do not destroy washing machines, as most people fear, on the contrary - they are beneficial. The soap is strongly alkaline and washes nicely even in very hard Water. A vinegar rinse will then prevent limescale build-up from soaking. Objectively, I have to say that the drum in the washing machine at the cottage shines with newness, although we wash in Water drawn from the well, which is so hard that it leaves maps on the sink when it dries. That's why I started using vinegar instead of dishwasher polish as well. The dishes have been beautifully shiny since then and the dishwasher doesn't clog.
Benefits of washing in soap Washing in soap saves money.
  • A bar of soap usually ranges from 15 to 40 CZK. Super quality natural Marseille soap costs around 150 CZK, but its grammage is usually 600g, which is enough for two buckets of washing slime. A bottle of vinegar costs approximately 10 CZK and 1 kg of crystal soda costs on average 25 CZK (1 kg of soda is enough for approximately 10 buckets of soap emulsion). Quality bile soap can be bought in DM for up to twenty crowns, soaps of other brands are (I don't know why) much more expensive.
  • The soap is gentle on the skin. It contains no bleach or colour brighteners, just no cheMicals.
  • The laundry is well washed.
  • Washing in soap is environmentally friendly.

Instructions for safe handling and pre-medical first aid: keep out of reach of children. Avoid contact with eyes. In case of eye contact, rinse eyes thoroughly with Water. Don't eat. Seek medical attention if swallowed. Dispose of used packaging at the municipality's designated waste disposal site!
