Excellent salad onion suitable primarily for consumption raw. Processing at higher temperatures leads to undesirable color change. The average weight of planted onions is 69 g, sown 50 g. The average yield reaches 28 - 35 t /ha for sown and up to 40 t /ha for planted onions.
Water during dry periods. The crop requires fungicide protection against onion mildew from mid-June.
Growing onions from direct seeding.
For growing onions, moderately heavy loamy sandy soils in warm locations are the most suitable. It is included in the second to third rotation with a good supply of nutrients, with a pH of at least 5.5. We sow as early as possible in spring so that the seeds have enough moisture, in rows 30 - 35 cm apart, to a depth of 2-3 cm. We thin in the row as needed to 4 - 5 cm. During the growing season, we pay attention to cultivation to maintain an aerated soil structure. Irrigation is suitable, but only until mid-July. In closed locations and during humid periods, onions require fungicide protection against onion mildew from mid-June. We harvest when the tops of half the plants are lying down and the onions have a yellow-brown skin. We dry them on the beds or on racks.
Growing onions from sets.
This growing technology is particularly suitable for the varieties Stuttgart and Všetana. For pre-growing sets, we sow seeds densely in rows from March to mid-April. For 10 m2, we need approximately 100 g of seeds. When the onions reach the thickness of a pencil, we pull out the crop and let it dry in the sun. The optimal storage temperature is below 5°C or above 15°C. The next year, we plant the sets in the bed early in spring, so that the end of the neck slightly protrudes above the surface of the bed. We plant 100 - 300 g of bulbs per square meter in a spacing of 20 x 8 - 10 cm. Onions grown from sets have poorer storability compared to directly sown onions, but a significantly earlier harvest.
Growing overwintering varieties.
Winter varieties are particularly interesting for achieving an early harvest because they mature even earlier than onions grown from sets. We sow the seeds from mid-August to early September (early sowing causes bolting, while late sowing leads to freezing of underdeveloped plants). After sowing, it is essential to ensure sufficient moisture for the seedlings so that the plants start to grow quickly and reach a thickness of at least 5 mm before frost.
